Technological Thoughts

May 19, 2001

I was listening to the radio today and something struck me.  No it did not hurt.  I believe it was a business report and the talk was technology stock.  Since I was driving and there was no one in front of me of any importance I began thinking about this technology stuff.  While straining my two or three working brain cells a commercial came on for Cadillacs touting the latest in "automotive technology".  There was the word again. Technology.

I personally like technology.  I must since I have a computer and run a web site.  I work on the technical side of my "industry".  I find it amazing what can be done today.  The neat little gadgets we use like the Handspring Visor or Palm Pilot.  Cellular phones and wireless communications.  Look at how fast you can connect to the internet.  DSL.  High-Speed Cable Modems.  T-1 lines at home!? It's only money.  Funny thing is I still use a dial-up to my ISP. People love technology.

Sales people and marketers love technology, too.  There are people who would listen to that Cadillac commercial and hear that it contains the "latest in automotive technology" and want to buy this car.  Technology sells.  DVD players sell.  MP3 players sell. Yet, have you noticed that the big push only lasts a short time? New technology comes in and pushes out the old.  New things to sell!  Let's brainwash people into thinking they need the latest and greatest.  Why do you think technology stocks are so volatile?  Why do you think the dot com companies wax and wane with the tides?  In many cases people realize they do not need it!

Many people surf the Net still.  Many do not.  It is boring.  Same old stuff, different site.  Even my site is not that different, but it gives me a place to release some tension.  Look around your place and find the technology that you purchased and tell me if it is in use.  I have stuff just sitting there.  I think I am going to donate it to charity so I can write something off at tax time.  Of course I will not stop purchasing "new" technology.  What is money for anyways.  The problem is I do not have enough to buy what I want. Funny how that works.

Technology seems to drive people.  It drives our society here in America.  It drives capitalism.  Consumerism.  People need stuff. People want stuff.  What stuff?  Gadgets.  Toys.  This technology stuff is way cool.  I love it.  I also see many people get hurt by it. Technology is great if we use it right and we do not let it get out of hand.  When you feel overwhelmed by all this technology stuff, go outside and play with your dog.  Funny how relaxing it is to just play with your dog.  Such a simple, un-technological thing.
