CRIME PAYS!

February 11, 2001

I read a story recently that blows me away. The City Council of Denver approved a settlement of $1.2 million to a teenage burglar who was shot while trying to escape. Sounds fishy already, eh? The defendant claimed police misconduct. I don't know if I follow this. I need to think about this:

A person is committing a crime. Burglary. I would call it breaking and entering. This person is a thief. So what if he was only 12 years of age at the time. He is breaking the law! An officer approaches the house not knowing what is happening. Suddenly this thief, crook, kid, runs out of the house. The officer shouts, "Freeze" or some command to stop. The kid doesn't stop, and the officer shoots to stop him. By the way, the kid was armed with a gun, but it wasn't drawn. What happens if the officer pursues him and ends up being shot because he didn't take action right away as he did?

What am I missing? The kid has broken the law and was evading (avoiding) arrest. The kid should have stopped and taken responsibility for his actions. Now he is paralyzed from the neck down. Serves him right. That is his payment for being stupid; yet, they go to court and say the shooting was not justified. He gets a lot of money because of some bleeding heart jury.

I say the parents did not teach this kid responsibility. The kid broke the law for crying out loud! This may be shortsighted on my part. This is becoming all too common. Scum filing lawsuits because they screw up while in the process of breaking the law. There should be no lenience for those that break the law. Why do parents not teach responsibility to their children? Why are people such idiots? Why do lawyers accept such cases? If a person is innocent, they have nothing to worry about. The police need to take care and watch their actions; then again, we all have to. Let's see what would happen if we all start taking responsibility for our actions instead of placing blame on others. Until we do this, crime will continue to pay.
